Alongside GPT-5.6, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Work, a new AI workspace designed to help users tackle projects that traditionally required multiple applications, specialists, or hours of manual effort. OpenAI describes it as “a partner for your most ambitious work” rather than simply another chatbot.
ChatGPT Work combines the conversational capabilities of ChatGPT with the autonomous execution abilities of Codex, allowing the system to work across files, applications, and business tools while staying focused on a task for extended periods of time.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Work can:
Create reports, presentations, and spreadsheets
Build websites and internal tools
Analyze business data and research documents
Work across connected apps and files
Coordinate long-running projects
Execute multi-step workflows with minimal supervision
Unlike traditional AI assistants that answer one prompt at a time, ChatGPT Work is designed to operate more like an AI coworker that can maintain context, plan work, and complete objectives over hours rather than minutes.
The platform integrates with enterprise tools such as email, cloud storage, collaboration platforms, and business applications, allowing it to move beyond content generation into actual task execution and workflow orchestration.
OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT Work as a major step toward the future of knowledge work, where AI systems act less like assistants waiting for instructions and more like collaborators capable of independently driving projects forward from idea to completion.
