The next version of game development engine Unity is inbound, with a number of interesting updates for developers who've stuck with the software through Unity's last few years of turmoil and controversy. Today at Unite Seoul, the company announced Unity 7, a new version of Unity promising speedier workflows, a more open software ecosystem, improved graphics, and "smarter growth and monetization."
Additionally, the company is making an unusual promise about the process of updating from your version of Unity 6 to Unity 7: because the engine is a "direct continuation" of Unity 6 architecture, upgrading your version of the software will require "zero rebuilding." "All projects, skills, and code will carry forward smoothly into the next generation," the company promised.
Unity 7 will enter early beta testing in December 2026, with the final release taking place sometime in early 2027.
Senior vice president of product Adam Smith offered some context on these new features in an email exchange with Game Developer. According to him, every foundational piece of Unity 7 such as CoreCLR, Surface Cache GI, and other features, is being "shipped and production-verified" inside versions of Unity 6 before being implemented in Unity 7.

"Because the architecture underneath doesn't change at the moment of version transition, teams can adopt with ease, with the workflows they depend on remaining fully supported," he said.
The new "open, collaborative ecosystem" might be difficult for some readers to wrap their heads around at first. It's pitched as "a new CLI and public API" that lets artists, producers, and other developers "validate assets, push builds, and collaborate from their own tools" without full access to the Unity editor.
Smith said this new system isn't about direct submission pipelines, but about letting developers work in external tools without wiring them directly into Unity. For instance, an artist working in Blender can be sent a "deep link" that carries "the full project, scene, asset, and revision context" needed to make a requested fix.
The artist would then open Unity's web dashboard in a browser, make the requested fix, and be able to check it against full in-game lighting and animation context using the new Scene Preview feature. The change can then be checked in to source control, and an engineer can quickly validate that asset and push an updated build using the new CLI.
Unity wants developers to choose how much generative AI goes into their game
Interestingly, the company seems to be hedging its language when it comes to integrating generative AI—at least when you compare it to Epic Games' announcement of Unreal Engine 6.

The controversial technology is invoked, with a promise that Unity will "work hand-in-hand with AI tools developers already use," make use of "AI-assisted graphics optimization," and boast integration with Unity Vector, the AI tool powering Unity ads. But there's nothing as bombastic as CEO Adam Bromberg's previous prediction that AI tools would one day allow developers to "prompt full casual games into existence."
Smith told Game Developer that Unity's vision for AI tech is to "put the power to create in as many hands as possible," the same as its general vision for the game engine. "It's true that game creation is evolving—teams of creators and coding agents are increasingly working side by side, and Unity 7 is genuinely built for that world," he said. "But built for that world doesn't mean built to require it."
Referencing the open ecosystem technology, he noted that the aforementioned architecture would let a coding agent "plug in and validate a build" or let a producer review a scene via browser without opening the Editor.
"If your studio has committed to keeping AI out of your creative work—you're not on the sidelines of this release," Smith promised. "Unity 7 is built for a future where humans and coding agents can work together. But the choice is always the team's, not the platform's."
