How a Grocery Store Conversation Inspired Me to Build a Hindi–Malayalam–English Translator in Flutter
Hi everyone
I'm a Flutter developer from Kerala, and I'd like to share the story behind one of my recent projects.
Unlike many project ideas that begin with brainstorming or hackathons, this one started with a simple everyday situation.
One day I was standing in a grocery store.
A customer walked in and started speaking in Hindi.
The shopkeeper spoke only Malayalam.
For the next few minutes they tried everything.
• Hand gestures
• Pointing at products
• Repeating the same words
• Smiling and hoping the other person would understand
Eventually they managed to communicate, but it made me think...
Why is this still difficult in 2026?
Almost everyone has a smartphone.
Why couldn't there be an app that instantly helps people communicate naturally?
That moment inspired me to start building a translator that focuses on real conversations instead of only translating text.
My goal wasn't to replace human communication.
It was simply to remove the language barrier between two people.
Features that i implemented this app :
Hindi ↔ Malayalam
Hindi ↔ English
English ↔ Hindi
Voice Translation
Conversation Mode
OCR (Image Translation)
Text-to-Speech
Translation History
Clean Material UI
THE TECH STACK THAT I USED
Flutter
Dart
Provider
Google ML Kit
Speech To Text
Text To Speech
Translation APIs
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS PROJECT WAS :
This project reminded me that the best app ideas don't always come from startup ideas.
Sometimes they come from observing everyday problems.
As developers, we often look for complicated ideas.
But solving a simple real-world problem can have much more impact.
If you'd like to try it, it's available on Google Play.
I'd genuinely appreciate your feedback.
