The first KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Japan took place in Tokyo in June 2025 and kicked off a cloud native skills boom in the region. In the twelve months since the conference, Kubernetes exams taken in Japan have increased by 250%. This growth is the result of a growing community of highly certified professionals running production infrastructure at scale.

Scaling Production-Ready Expertise for AI Inference

Over the last 12 months, the number of Kubestronauts in Japan increased by 170%. Growth has come at two levels: the standard Kubestronaut tier grew by 121%, while Golden Kubestronauts grew from 0 to 31—a remarkable jump for the highest tier of certification. Japan accounts for 11.9% of all certified Kubestronauts in Asia but an outsized 20.8% of Golden status Kubestronauts in Asia. That translates into a Golden conversion rate of 18.2%—almost double the wider Asian rate of 10.4%.

With over 3,500 members in 100+ countries, the Kubestronaut program certifies the skills needed to run the infrastructure and inference workloads of the AI era. This collective of certified professionals ensures the practitioners scaling these systems have the rigorous, production-tested skills to navigate the dynamic challenges of modern cloud native development. Golden Kubestronauts are those who have passed all 15 of CNCF’s cloud native certifications and hold the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator credential (LFCS).

This concentration of Golden Kubestronauts is a striking signal of momentum that shows the real-world need to master the full stack needed to run the demanding, 24/7 inference workloads at the core of the AI era.

The community’s growth is also becoming more diverse; over 15.3% of Kubestronauts in Japan are women, more than twice the 7.6% average across Asia. That’s a powerful signal for where this community is headed—more voices, more perspectives, and a deeper talent pool as cloud native adoption accelerates.
